ACAP Saint John invites you to join us for a field trip to one of our outdoor locations, where you can explore the natural environment and learn about its importance and challenges. We have several sites to choose from, such as the Irving Nature Park, the Marsh Creek Wetland, the Reversing Falls, and the Saint John Harbour. "Fairlight Farm & Forest Centre is run by Leah ""Sparrow"" Houghton, who has extensive teaching experience in outdoor settings and specializes in survival skills and farm animals. The many farm animals (horses, pigs, chickens, cow, goats, pony) are a big draw, as children can participate in chores and learn about livestock care and food security. The farm also has an outdoor classroom and multiple camps in the 40 acres of mixed hardwood/softwood forest and a stream for exploring.
This program is designed to get youth excited about biodiversity conservation, through a multi-faceted educational approach highlighting the importance of healthy, functioning ecosystems!
Students will get to use a Water Rangers kit to take water quality samples from the Hammond River- they will learn the concepts of testing water’s pH, conductivity, salinity, temperature, and alkalinity. They will be Citizen Scientists for the day!
We would love to engage your class in environmental education whether it's a classroom session or outdoor field trip! We have previously hosted angling activities, bioblitz adventures, and benthics (riverbed bugs) demonstrations. We can also organize a visit to one of our rain gardens or restoration sites, or involve the kids in volunteer work such as bird box building, tree planting or willow cutting. The programs we can offer are dependent on available funding, but feel free to reach out and we can determine the activity that's right for you.
