Outdoor teaching and learning (all disciplines)
At The Gaia Project, we use a unique approach to empower youth, K-12, to take action. We incorporate inquiry-based education, curriculum links, and local action in each of our projects.
We offer 1-hour staff-guided curriculum-linked nature walks on the trails of the 440 hectare Meduxnekeag Valley Nature Preserve to K-5 classes and 2 hr hands-on science workshops for Middle and High School classes on trees, forest soils and water quality. Free to schools; we pay busing.
Nous offrons une variété de programmes bilingues amusants et interactifs qui sont liés au programme d’études et adapté à la plupart des niveaux! Selon le sujet et la saison, nous pouvons livrer des programmes à l’intérieur ou à l’extérieur. "Fairlight Farm & Forest Centre is run by Leah ""Sparrow"" Houghton, who has extensive teaching experience in outdoor settings and specializes in survival skills and farm animals. The many farm animals (horses, pigs, chickens, cow, goats, pony) are a big draw, as children can participate in chores and learn about livestock care and food security. The farm also has an outdoor classroom and multiple camps in the 40 acres of mixed hardwood/softwood forest and a stream for exploring.
We would love to engage your class in environmental education whether it's a classroom session or outdoor field trip! We have previously hosted angling activities, bioblitz adventures, and benthics (riverbed bugs) demonstrations. We can also organize a visit to one of our rain gardens or restoration sites, or involve the kids in volunteer work such as bird box building, tree planting or willow cutting. The programs we can offer are dependent on available funding, but feel free to reach out and we can determine the activity that's right for you.
This is a teacher's workshop that involves a field trip to a beach in the Parrsboro, NS area to learn how to teach the basics about rock identification. Provided with the workshop are classroom-ready teaching resources including, a comprehensive Pebble Guide (based on the Science 4 Properties and Uses of Earth Materials curriculum); a field journal; and a pencil case filled with a magnifier, ruler, pencil, eraser and sharpener.
