Rock Identification Field Trip

This is a teacher's workshop that involves a field trip to a beach in the Parrsboro, NS area to learn how to teach the basics about rock identification. Provided with the workshop are classroom-ready teaching resources including, a comprehensive Pebble Guide (based on the Science 4 Properties and Uses of Earth Materials curriculum); a field journal; and a pencil case filled with a magnifier, ruler, pencil, eraser and sharpener. The teachers will be guided through a rock identification exercise by collecting pebbles from the beach that are representative of some of the common rock names of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock types. Although this is Grade 4 level curriculum, middle school and high school science teachers have also found this workshop to be a great refresher for themselves and applicable for their students. A mimimum a 5 teachers are required to schedule a workshop with a minimum notice of 6 weeks in order to allow time to apply for an outreach grant to cover the cost of the resources and bus transportation that will be provided.
